Assessment comes first
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a traditional method used in Chinese medicine. It involves inserting fine needles at selected points on the body. Before starting, the practitioner reviews your health information and medicines, explains the procedure and its risks, and determines the approach based on an individual assessment.

A traditional perspective
Understanding Qi, blood and the feeling of “trapped wind”

In TCM, Qi, blood and meridians are traditional concepts used to understand the body’s condition. Practitioners use this framework to guide their assessment and point selection, with the aim of promoting balance and the flow of Qi and blood.
This is a traditional explanation. It does not mean that acupuncture releases trapped gas or that a blocked blood vessel has been identified.
Some people describe discomfort as “trapped wind”, heaviness or a feeling of being stuck. We ask about the actual symptoms rather than assuming a cause from these descriptions alone.

Questions, answered.
What might I feel during a first session?
You may feel a brief prick, pressure, heaviness or local discomfort. Experiences vary. Tell the practitioner immediately if you experience significant discomfort.
Is the same approach used for everyone?
The approach depends on your health information and assessment. Any further sessions should be discussed with the practitioner.
What should I tell the practitioner beforehand?
Tell the practitioner if you are pregnant, take medicines—especially blood thinners—have a bleeding condition, have had a recent injury or surgery, or have other important health information. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
Are there any risks?
Local discomfort, minor bleeding or bruising can occur. Serious complications are uncommon, but the procedure is not risk-free. Discuss risks and suitability with the practitioner before starting.
